She sucks the air from the room, and her body shudders.
A pounding at the door has me taking a step back. Blake rushes in, checking on her. Her lower lip quivers, and she lifts her shoulders, offering him a broken smile.
“I’m not worth it, Blake. Never was. Never will be.”
Her meek voice fucking obliterates my heart.
“No, Abi. Don’t go there.”
Blake tears me from her and pushes me into the wall. “You know things about her, and you play those fucking mind games with her. Stay away from her or I’ll end you.”
“Both of you, get the fuck out of my house.”
She tries for the third time to get her jeans on, and I force myself not to tie her to my bed—to me—and never let her go.
Blake crouches in front of her, helping her.
“I’m never drinking again,” she sniffles.
It takes everything in me to stay rooted in place and not go to her.
“Good,” Blake says.
“You don’t look wasted. You never look wasted.”
“I built a tolerance. Now, hop up.”
“Don’t tell Kaden.”
“Between you and him, you’ll make me go crazy.”
“It’s not our fault.”
He pierces me with a hard glare. “No, it’s the fault of fucking crybabies who only see just their hurt and not your sacrifices.”
“Celine’s hurt.”
What the fuck are they talking about?
“And he…” Abigail looks straight into my eyes. A dejected smile tips down the corners of her mouth and she sighs. “I gave him my all, and it was not worth it. I am a—”
Blake puts his hand on her mouth. “If you ever say that and I hear you, I’m going to lose my shit. You never were and never will be what that motherfucker said.”
She jumps into his arms and cries softly, butchering me. That fucking secrecy again. I barely hold on to my composure.
Blake pulls her zipper up, and she says, “I’m thirsty.”
“I have water in the car.”
I get in his face. “You drank. You’re not taking her in your car.”
“Stop me if you can, asshole.”
I block his way, and Abigail says, “I’d rather die in a car with him, than have you kill me again.”
They sidestep me, and I drop to my knees when the door closes.
What the fuck am I doing? This was a mistake.
