“I should probably get home,” she murmured.

Sawyer took her hand. “I’ll walk you back.”

CHAPTER SIX

She was so aware of Sawyer as he walked beside her.

The beach was shrouded in darkness, with just the moonlight glinting on the water.

It was romantic.

Everything Hollis had learned about Sawyer Lane, she liked. She rarely got a chance to get to really know people, without fame getting in the way. People always wanted the glamorous actress, not her. Regular, old Hollis.

Sawyer didn’t seem wowed by her fame at all.

She liked that. A lot.

“Your family is so fun,” she said.

“They’re not mine, they’re Benny’s, but they sort of adopted me.”

“That makes them even more special.”

“Yeah. But they can be nosy as hell sometimes. Beware a matchmaking auntie on the war path.”

Hollis grinned. “Have they tried to fix you up with some nice, young girls?”

“Yeah. A few times.”

“But it didn’t stick?” She found her chest hitching as she waited for his answer.

“Wasn’t interested.” He glanced her way, his face in shadow. “After I got out, I…well, I was a little worried that part of me had gone to sleep.”

Her heart hit her ribs. “And now?”

“It’s awake now.”

Her belly tightened. Did he mean her? She licked her lips. Neither of them wanted a relationship. Neither of them were looking for it.

Hell, her life was a giant mess right now. The last thing she needed was a man. But she couldn’t deny the attraction between them.

Her house came into view, and they walked up the steps and past the pool.

“I appreciate you walking me back.”

“I didn’t want you accidentally starting a fire.”

“Ha-ha.” She unlocked the sliding door, nerves alive in her belly. When was the last time she’d had nerves over a man?

Then again, she’d never met a man like Sawyer.

She already trusted him, and he was so…big, solid.

“Would you like to come in for a drink?” She turned and their gazes met.

“Yes.”

“Great. Great.”Act normal, Hols. She stepped inside and dropped her handbag on the floor.
