Also, you called me Charlie tonight.
Several times.
That was ten times now.
And you did it during some intimate moments.
Why?
ME:
Because saying your name has always felt intimate for me. Nicknames have been a way to keep my distance, even though I never wanted to. I’ve been fascinated with you since the moment we met, red.
No sense in sugar coating it. She’s so much more than the girl I’ve been curious about for years now. More than my friend’s sister and the woman I love to rile up. So, so much more.
CHARLIE:
But you still use the nicknames.
What does that mean?
ME:
That they’re a part of us now. And that I’m probably a little bit obsessed with the color of your hair. I mean, red, carrot cake, pumpkin (pie and spice), Ginger Spice, strawberry shortcake…
CHARLIE:
What about Chuck?
ME:
I think we can retire that one. What do you think?
That nickname was strictly to piss her off. And the first way I put distance between us.
CHARLIE:
I don’t know. It’s sort of grown on me.
If you really don’t like it, you can stop.
But just know that I don’t mind it.
Just never call me Charlotte.
Or Lottie.
ME:
Deal. Any other questions?
CHARLIE:
No. I’m good for now.
I guess I can stop counting how many times you say my name now.
Thank you again for tonight. For being so thoughtful and understanding.
