He shook his head. “Teu cu.”
“Did you curse at me?”
“I’m not cursing ‘at’ you, querida, but I don’t know if I can do this. Sayeda, I missed you until I would see you in a mirage, sometimes next to me on my sleeping mat. And I knew I was coming back.”
“Come with me. I know you signed a contract, but Atlas said he can get me out. Maybe he can get you out too.”
“Do you know what happens if I break it?” he asked.
“They kill you.”
“No, they will kill you.” He dragged his fingers through his hair. “Merda. That’s what it was.”
“What do you mean?”
“My feelings for you. They make you a target. See, killing me is easy. The fact that I’m in this life means that I don’t fear death like most other people. But,” he took her hand, clasped it, and held it against his chest, “I would do many things to make sure you’re safe. Virtually, I will do anything.”
All the information merged at once, but she had difficulty believing it. Mora didn’t know her well enough. Mora had barely been part of her life, so there was no way the maternal manipulator could have guessed that she and Adrían would have hit it off as well as they had. There was no way Mora could have guessed that she would have fallen in love with Adrían.
“If it wasn’t me, then it would have been Hannah,” she whispered, partly to herself.
She wanted to scream.
If she never understood before, she now fully comprehended why some daughters offed their mothers.
“We could end it,” she suggested. “Then, they’ll have nothing over you.”
He brought her close and kissed her with that familiar tenderness that turned all her bones to liquid. Their lips remained connected as she climbed over him, her legs gripping either side of his waist.
“We’re not,” he licked her bottom lip, “going to,” he sucked her top lip, “do that. I will get you out. You and Hannah. As long as you’re safe, I’ll do what they want.”
“Come with me.”
“I wish I could.”
“Adrían, if I get out…we might never see each other again.”
“I know, but I would appreciate it if you didn’t say it out loud.”
This man loved her.
He had to.
She saw it, felt it.
Unfortunately, she was the only one.
“I, uh…” She cleared her throat. “Don’t get me wrong. I know what the smart choice is here, but I don’t know. Adrían, when I came here, all I wanted to do was go home. Open a restaurant. Live my life. Now, I would give it all up to stay with you.”
“But you won’t.”
“I love…being with you.”
“But you won’t.” He kissed her, one hand at the side of her face while the other squeezed her hip, encouraging her to lift. “Up, querida.”
She rose.
When she lowered again, it was slower as she took him inside her until she could take no more.
