A guy hovers over Madison on the ground. I don’t think. My blood boils. My vision turns red around the edges. I lurch forward and shove the guy away from her.
“Whoa.” The guy lands on his ass with his hands up to protect himself.
I kneel next to Madison and check her over, afraid to touch her for a second. Her face is pale, but as I watch, her chest rises and falls. Relief pours through me. I cup her cheek. “Madison?”
“Noah,” the guy says. I finally look at him and see it’s our attorney. Patrick.
Glaring, I lift Madison onto my lap and into my arms, needing her close. “What were you doing?”
“Punching the guy who was assaulting your assistant.” He glances to a wall and sighs. “Who must have escaped when she fainted.”
“What were you doing here?” This is an odd place to just walk by. I didn’t miss the fact that the asshole who ran into me just then was probably the one who assaulted Madison. The urge to tear through the benefit to find him races through me. But she’s in my arms and safe for the moment.
I still don’t know how Patrick “stumbled” upon them. I’m a mixed bag of feelings right now. Worry, relief. Suspicion, gratitude.
“I was meeting someone.” Patrick looks embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck. “She was supposed to meet me in the medieval wing.”
Madison sighs and turns into me. Fuck it. The guy was heading off to cheat on his wife but stopped my girl from being assaulted. Gratitude wins.
I glance at Madison and run my finger down the side of her face. “Hey, kitten.”
She breathes out and smiles with her eyes still shut. “Noah.”
“Yeah, love. You need to open your eyes.”
Patrick stands and fixes his tuxedo. “The guy was a little shorter than me. Brown hair. Brown eyes. Smelled like a bar.”
“He ran into me on the way here.” I nod at him but focus on Madison.
Her eyes finally open, and she blinks at me for a second before she focuses.
“You okay, kitten?”
“You’re here?” She seems confused.
“Did she hit her head?” My fingers run over her scalp, but I don’t feel any swelling.
“I caught her before she hit the floor and just lowered her down.” Patrick glances over his shoulder. “We should contact the police.”
“Would you mind texting the others?” I don’t take my eyes off Madison’s as I ask Patrick that. He knows everything about us. He’s the one who drew up our contracts for Madison.
“Noah!” Suddenly, Madison grabs my hand. Her eyes are wide and scared. “My professor.”
“Your professor?” Shit, maybe she hit her head before she fainted. “You need to rest. Do you know who assaulted you?”
This time rings in my head. The overwhelming urge to wrap her in bubble wrap and keep her in the apartment isn’t rational, but I can’t stand the thought of her being hurt again. I should have been here. I should have been the one to punch the guy hurting her.
“My stalker,” she says. “Jimi Alan. He mentioned my sundress.” She grabs my hand and squeezes it.
I glance over at Patrick.
He nods. “I’ll call the police.”
